Local Info

Brevard County, Florida

With a 72-mile-long stretch of beaches and mainland to explore, you are unlikely to run out of discoveries in Brevard County. A necklace of hospitable towns strung along Florida’s Atlantic coast, the Space Coast is home to the rocket missions that turn the night sky bright. It also contrasts the best of town and country, from the shops and restaurants of downtown Melbourne to a dazzling array of birds at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. People enjoy shopping in such spots as Cocoa Village and The Avenue Viera; exploring space history in Titusville or at Kennedy Space Center; and greeting the animals at Brevard Zoo. Outdoors, they kayak on Palm Bay’s Turkey Creek or Cocoa Beach’s Thousand Islands, surf on our uncrowded beaches, and fish on boats out of Port Canaveral or on the Indian River Lagoon, which includes the Banana River. And there’s nothing like a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice from a local grove to start the morning.

More than 540,000 people live here, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. As the population increases, so do our concerns about development, traffic, the environment, schools and medical care. You can find out more about all of them here.

The railroad arrived in the 1880s, when the “mosquito beaters” endured summer’s heat and a lack of conveniences. The spaceport emerged in the 1950s and 1960s, and now the space program is turning its focus toward taking astronauts into deep space and developing commercial space taxis.
